Abstract
Purpose: The high ligation and saphenous stripping procedure has been the most common traditional therapeutic
method for treatment of lower extremity varicose vein for many centuries. Recently Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT),
VNUS¨Þ - high frequency electrical coagulation, and the Trivex¨Þ had been introduced for the minimally invasive and
cosmetic purpose procedures to treat the varicose veins. However their clinical results had showed relatively high
recurrence rate and considerable complications, so authors searched for better treatment method which can fulfill the
requirements, such as minimal invasiveness, good cosmetic results, low recurrence rate, and less complications. For the
first time, We introduced this cryosurgery (cryostripping & cryophlebectomy) for varicose vein to phlebology in Korea
since last several years.

Methods: From July 2006 to June 2009, the cryosurgery was applied for 1,157 cases for the treatment of varicose veins using Cryo in our center.

Results: Cryostripping had been performed in the greater saphenous vein (824 cases), and lesser saphenous vein (333 cases). Among the 1,157 operation cases, we have experienced just only one case of recurrence in LSV
operation and the incidence of peripheral nerve injury was 0.1% (2 cases/1,157) in our study as compared with other
reports of 3%.

Conclusion: The results of cryosurgery for the treatment of varicose vein is very satisfactory at the moment, however it will be necessary to follow up the patients for more long term period.
